GUAM:
spacerSUPERFORTRESSES FROM THE MARIANAS STRUCK AT THE JAPANESE HOMELAND EARLY SUNDAY, LESS THAN 24 HOURS AFTER THE JAPANESE RECEIVED ADVANCE WARNING THAT ELEVEN OF THEIR CITIES WERE TO BE BURNED OUT.   THERE HAS BEEN NO OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE STRIKE AS YET, BUT NBC CORRESPONDENT RAY CLARK MADE A BROADCAST DIRECT FROM THE SUPERFORTRESS "CITY OF OMAHA", AS IT ROARED OVER THE ENEMY CITY OF AGAKI SUNDAY MORNING.   CLARK MADE HIS BROADCAST JUST AS THE BOMBARDIER REPORTED BOMBS AWAY.   THE NBC CORRESPONDENT SAID IT WAS THE FIRST DIRECT BROADCAST OF AN ACTUAL BOMB RUN.   ANOTHER NBC CORRESPONDENT, GEORGE THOMAS FOLSTER, BROADCASTING FROM GUAM, REPORTED THAT SEVEN TASK FORCES OF B-29'S WERE PARTICIPATING IN THE PRE-ANNOUNCED RAIDS.   MAJ. GEN. CURTIS LE MAY YESTERDAY ANNOUNCED THE LIST OF ELEVEN CITIES ON THE B-29'S SCHEDULE, AN UNPRECEDENTED PROGRAM OF CALLING A SHOT - - AND THEN MAKING IT.   FOLSTER SAID THAT SIX OF THE ELEVEN CITIES WERE ON THE SCHEDULE TODAY.   HE ADDED THAT IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT MORE THAN FOUR JAPANESE CITIES HAD ATTACKED BY THE SUPERFORTS ON A SINGLE DATE.

SAN FRANCISCO:
spacerAMERICAN AND BRITISH CARRIER PLANES OF ADM. HALSEY'S 3RD FLEET STRUCK AGAIN AT REMNANTS OF THE JAPANESE FLEET SATURDAY IN THE THIRD RAID THIS WEEK AGAINST THE INLAND SEA.   RETURNING FLIERS REPORTED THAT THE JAPANESE FLEET WAS ALMOST FINISHED OFF.   THE FLIERS LISTED THE 29,990 TON BATTLESHIP NYUGA AMONG MAJOR CRAFT SUNK IN THE SERIES OF ATTACKS.   OTHER WARSHIPS WERE SEEN BATTERED AND BLAZING AROUND KURE NAVAL BASE WHERE ONE AIR GROUP COMMANDER DECLARED: "WE DID A BEAUTIFUL JOB".   THE JAPANESE NAVY, ONCE THE WORLD'S THIRD LARGEST HAS BEEN REDUCED TO SCATTERED LIGHT UNITS.   REPORTS OF THE FLIERS, ALONG WITH ADM. NIMITZ LATEST COMMUNIQUE, DISCLOSED THAT ALL OF JAPAN'S HEAVY SHIPS HAVE BEEN SUNK OR PUT OUT OF ACTION.

spacerTHE CARRIERS LAUNCHED THE FIRST ATTACK AT DAWN SATURDAY AND STRUCK IN GENERALLY CLEAR WEATHER.   TOKYO RADIO REPORTED THAT THE ALLIED CARRIER PLANES STILL WERE COMING AT NOON.   THE JAPANESE, STUNNED INTO RISKING SOME OF THEIR INTERCEPTORS, SENT PLANES INTO THE AIR IN CONSIDERABLE NUMBERS TO ENGAGE THE ALLIED CRAFT.   NONE, HOWEVER, VENTURED NEAR THE CARRIERS AND SHEILDING WARSHIPS OF THE 3RD FLEET.

GUAM:
spacerNEARLY FIFTEEN HUNDRED UNITED STATES AND BRITISH CARRIER PLANES BATTLED THROUGH HEAVY FLAK AND FIGHTER SCREENS EARLY SATURDAY TO DEAL THE THIRD HEAVY BLOW OF THE WEEK AGAINST THE BATTERED JAPANESE FLEET.   PILOTS REPORTED THAT THE JAPANESE BATTLESHIP NYUGA, A CONVERTED WARSHIP WITH A FLIGHT DECK FOR CATUPULTING PLANES, HAD BEEN SUNK IN THE GREAT NAVAL BASE OF KURE.   THE NYUGA HAD BEEN REPORTED DAMAGED IN STRIKES EARLIER THIS WEEK.   THE SWARMS OF ALLIED CARRIER PLANES MET THE STIFFEST ENEMY AIR OPPOSITION YET ENCOUNTERED BY THE THIRD FLEET IN THE NINTEEN DAYS OF ADM. HALSEY'S PRESENT OPERATIONS.   JAPAESE ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNNERS THREW UP A HEAVY CURTAIN OF FLAK, BUT FAILED TO DRIVE OFF THE ALLIED PLANES.   CORRESPONDENTS REPORTED THAT FIRES RAGED THROUGH THE HARBOR AT KURE AND FLAMES SPURTED SKYWARD FROM THE SHIPS OF WHAT WAS ONCE THE THIRD MIGHTIEST FLEET IN THE WORLD.   AFTER THIS THIRD ATTACK WITHIN A WEEK, JAPAN WAS LEFT WITHOUT A SINGLE HEAVY WARSHIP FIT FOR ACTION.   ADM. HALSEY'S HARD-HITTING CARRIER PLANES KNOCKED OUT TWENTY-SIX WARSHIPS, INCLUDING THREE BATTLESHIPS, SIX AIRCRAFT CARRIERS AND FOUR CRUISERS IN STRIKES TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY ALONE.

spacerTHE JAPANESE DECLARED THAT THE CARRIER PLANES NOT ONLY ATTACKED THE INLAND SEA AND KURE, BUT FANNED OUT OVER THE SOUTHERN ISLAND OF SHIKOKU, BATTERING UP AIRFIELDS, FACTORIES AND SHIPPING.   THE JAPANESE ALSO SAID THAT TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY MUSTANGS FROM IWO JIMA BLASTED AIRFIELDS IN THE TOKYO AREA.

ADMIRAL NIMITZ'S LATEST COMMUNIQUE:
spacerREPORTS OF THE DAMAGE INFLICTED BY AMERICAN AND BRITISH CARRIER PLANES ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY.   IN THOSE TWO DAYS TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY EIGHT ASSORTED ENEMY VESSELS WERE SUNK OR DAMAGED AND TWO HUNDRED NINETY PLANES DESTROYED OR DAMAGED.   ALLIED LOSSES DURING THE TWO DAYS WERE FORTY TWO AMERICAN PLANES AND FORTY FLIERS, AND TEN BRITISH PLANES WITH TWELVE AIRMEN.

POTSDAM:
spacerBRITISH PRIME MINISTER CLEMENT ATTLEE AND HIS NEWLY APPOINTED FOREIGN SECRETARY ERNEST BEVIN, WERE DUE TO ARRIVE IN POTSDAM TODAY TO PICK UP THE THREADS OF THE BIG THREE CONFERENCE.   THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAID THAT WHILE THERE WAS NO OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING THE DURATION OF THE CONFERENCE, THE FEELING PERSISTED THAT IT WOULD BE CONCLUDED SOME TIME NEXT WEEK.

NEW YORK CITY:
spacerA B-25 BILLY MITCHELL BOMBER CRASHED WITH A THUNDEROUS EXPLOSION INTO THE 79TH FLOOR OF THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING IN NEW YORK SATURDAY MORNING AND KILLED AT LEAST THIRTEEN PERSONS.   THE CRASH SHOWERED FLAME AND DEBRIS THROUGHOUT THE UPPER PART OF THE 102 STORY STRUCTURE AND TRAPPED HUNDREDS OF OFFICE WORKERS A THOUSAND FEET ABOVE STREET LEVEL.

spacerTHE PLANE, LOST IN A FOG, ZOOMED DOWN FIFTH AVENUE AND CRASHED HEADLONG INTO THE NORTH SIDE OF THE WORLD'S TALLEST BUILDING.   OFFICE WORKERS IN THE BUILDING ITSELF AND PEDESTRIANS IN THE STREET BELOW WATCHED IN HORROR.   A SPECTACULAR BURST OF FLAMES ENVELOPED THE UPPER 250 FEET OF THE BUILDING INSTANTLY, AND THE EXPLOSION WAS HEARD FOR A RADIUS OF SEVERAL MILES.   DEBRIS WAS SCATTERED AS FAR AS FIVE BLOCKS AWAY.

spacerPARTS OF THE PLANE PENETRATED THE 78TH FLOOR AFTER STRIKING THE FLOOR ABOVE AND ANGLING DOWNWARD.   PART OF THE BOMBER REMAINED WEDGED IN THE BUILDING AND PART FELL FLAMING TO THE STREET AND ADJOINING ROOFS.

spacerAN ARMY FLIER WHO WITNESSED THE CRASH FROM THE STREET SAID THE PILOT HAD ONLY A MOMENT TO SEE HOW HE WAS GOING TO DIE.   HE SAID THE MOTORS WERE PERFECT AND THAT THE PILOT TRIED TO BANK TO THE LEFT AT THE LAST INSTANT BUT WAS TOO LATE.

spacerFLAMES AND SMOKE INSTANTLY SHOT THROUGH SIX FLOORS OF THE BUILDING AND THE TOWER OF THE HUGE EDIFACE RESEMBLED A GIANT TORCH.   THE GREATEST ARRAY OF FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT EVER ASSEMBLED IN NEW YORK RACED OUT IN RESPONSE TO FOUR FIRE ALARMS.   THOUSANDS GATHERED IN THE STREETS BELOW, BUT POLICE SOON ROPED OFF THE AREA FOR FIVE BLOCKS AROUND.

spacerTHE PLANE STRUCK NEAR A BANK OF EN ELEVATORS, AND THREE OF THEM CRASHED FROM THE 80TH FLOOR TO THE BASEMENT.   THREE PERSONS WERE KILLED IN TWO ELEVATORS.   THE OTHER WAS EMPTY.   THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING, WHOSE 1,250 FOOT OBSERVATION TOWER IS A MECCA FOR TOURISTS, NORMALLY HOUSES 5000 TENNANTS, BUT BECAUSE IT WAS SATURDAY MANY OFFICES WERE CLOSED.

spacerTHE PLANE TORE A GAPPING, 15 FOOT HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING, FROM WHICH STEEL GIRDERS HUNG LIKE SPAGHETTI.   PART OF THE PLANES COWLING STUCK TO THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING.   ONE ENGINE LANDED ON THE 79TH FLOOR.   THE LEFT WING WAS SHEARED OFF AND FLUTTERED THROUGH THE FOG ON TO MADISON AVENUE.   PARTS OF ONE PROPELLER WERE EMBEDDED IN THE WALL OF AN OFFICE.   THE OTHER WAS DRIVEN ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE BUILDING AND LANDED ON THE ROOF OF THE WALDORF BUILDING ON 33RD STREET. NEW YORK: CONT.
spacerTHE PLANE WAS ENROUTE FROM NEW BEDFORD MASS. TO LA GUARDIA FIELD AT NEW YORK.   IT CONTACTED LA GUARDIA FIELD FIVE MINUTES BEFORE THE CRASH AND WAS ADVISED TO PROCEED TO NEWARK, NEW JERSEY BECAUSE OF THE FOG.   THE PLANE WAS AT 700 FEET THEN AND LA GUARDIA OFFICIALS SAID THEY WARNED THE PILOT FROM THE CONTROL TOWER THAT THE MANHATTAN SKYSCRAPERS LAY IN HIS PATH AND THAT THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING WAS 1,250 FEET HIGH.   THAT WAS THE LAST CONTACT WITH THE PILOT.   ARMY OFFICIALS SAY THE PLANE CARRIED FOUR CREW MEMBERS.

WASHINGTON:
spacerA CALL FOR TIGHTENING SAFETY REGULATIONS AGAINST FLYING OVER CONGESTED AREAS CAME FROM SENATOR MEAD SATURDAY, AFTER A BOMBER CRASHED INTO THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING IN NEW YORK.

FIELD MARSHAL MONTGOMERY'S HQTRS:
spacerTHE FIRST MASS EVACUATION OF GERMAN TROOPS FROM NORWAY WILL START NEXT WEEK.   THE VANGUARD OF AN INITIAL GROUP OF 84,000 WILL BE LANDING AT TRAVEMUNDE, FIFTEEN MILES NORTH OF LUBECK ON THE BALTIC SEA.   FIELD MARSHAL MONTGOMERY SAID THE GERMANS WOULD BE PLACED IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS THERE.   IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 500,000 GERMANS IN NORWAY.

ASSOCIATED PRESS:
spacerREPORTS THAT THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF THE UNITED STATES HAS EMERGED IN NATIONAL POLITICS AFTER PARTY LEADERS, ANNOUNCED IN NEW YORK THE ORGANIZATION HAD BEEN RECONSTITUTED.   THE PARTY'S DISBANDMENT WAS PROCLAIMED 14 MONTHS AGO.   BUT FRIDAY, DELEGATES TO A SPECIAL NATIONAL CONVENTION IN NEW YORK VOTED TO REESTABLISH THE PARTY, AND THEY SAY THE PARTY IS READY NOW - - AND WE QUOTE - - "TO PLAY A MORE AGRESSIVE ROLE IN COMBATING FASCISM AND REACTION."

PARIS:
spacerFOR THE 6TH DAY, THE ATTENTION OF FRANCE WAS CENTERED MORE ON MARSHAL PETAIN THAN ON THE POTSDAM CONFERENCE OR BRITISH POLITICS.   MICHEL CLEMENCEAU, SON OF FRANCE'S "TIGER" OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR, WAS CALLED TO THE WITNESS STAND TO TESTIFY AS THE PROSECUTION CONTINUED TO ATTEMPT TO PROVE PETAIN GUILTY OF INTELLIGENCE WITH THE ENEMY AND PLOTTING AGAINST THE SECURITY OF FRANCE.
