INDEPENDENCE, MO: WEDNESDAY AT HIS HOME TOWN OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI; PRESIDENT TRUMAN ANNOUNCED THAT HE HAD PICKED EDWARD STETTINIUS AS U.S. REPRESENTATIVE TO THE UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE AND DISCLOSED THAT HE HAD ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF STETINIUS AS SECRETARY OF STATE.   HE TESTIFIED THAT HE WOULD ANNOUNCE THE NEW SEC'T OF STATE MONDAY OR TUESDAY.   HE LAUGHED OFF ATTEMPTS OF PRESSMEN TO HAVE HIM VERIFY THAT HE HAD JAMES F. BYRNES IN MIND FOR THE POST.   BYRNES IS FORMER SOUTH CAROLINA SENATOR, FORMER SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, AND FORMER WAR MOBILIZER.

THE PRESIDENT PRAISED SETTINIUS' WORK AT THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY CONFERENCE WHICH CLOSED IN SAN FRANCISCO TUESDAY AND IN A LETTER TOLD STETTINIUS THAT HE WANTED HIM TO TAKE THE LEAD IN BUILDING QUOTE "A SOLID STRUCTURE OF PEACE" UNQUOTE AND QUOTE "TO FORM A NEW WORLD CHARTER" WHICH WAS SIGNED IN SAN FRANCISCO TUESDAY.

THE PRESIDENT SAID THAT STETTINIUS HAD AGREED TO ACCEPT THE NOMINATION AS AMERICAN REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UNITED NATIONS ORGANIZATION WHEN IT COMES FORTH TO SERVE.   THE PRESIDENT WILL PRESENT THE CHARTER TO THE SENATE MONDAY AND ASK FOR IMMEDIATE RATIFICATION.   STETTINIUS, SENATOR CONNALLY AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE U.S. DELEGATION RETURNED TO WASHINGTON FROM SAN FRANCISCO AND SENATOR CONNALY PREDICTED RATIFICATION OF THE CHARTER AFTER TWO OR MORE WEEKS OF SENATE DEBATE.

PRESIDENT TRUMAN SAID THAT THE BIG THREE MEETING WILL BE NEXT MONTH AND THAT STETTINIUS WILL HAVE TO PASS IT UP AND REPRESENT THE PRESIDENT DURING THE SENATE DEBATE ON THE CHARTER.   THE PRESIDENT REFERRED TO THE NEW STETTINIUS APPOINTMENT AS THE "HIGHEST POST IN THE GIFT OF THE GOVERNMENT".

AT A RALLY WEDNESDAY THE PRESIDENT TOLD CHEERING THRONGS THAT HE HOPES THE BIG THREE MEETING WILL FIND A FORMULA FOR FINAL PEACE AND THAT WILL "ENSURE INSURE THE PEACE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME".

IT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT IN A FEW WEEKS THE UNITED NATIONS INFORMATION SERVICE IN NEW YORK WILL PUBLISH COMPLETE RECORDS OF THE THIRTY HUNDRED PAGES OF DOCUMENTS BILLED INTO THE CHARTER.   THE COST OR RATHER, THE PRICE OF THESE RECORDS WILL BE ABOUT $100.00.   (SEE SPINELLI FOR YOUR COPY)

RESIGNATION OF THE STATE SECRETARY AND WITH NO VICE PRESIDENT AND NO NEW STATE SECRETARY NAMED LEAVES SECRETARY MORGENTHAU NEXT IN LINE FOR THE PRESIDENCY IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO MR. TRUMAN.   MEANWHILE A HOUSE COMMITTEE APPROVED BILL FOR THE PRESIDENTS RECOMMENDATION THAT WOULD MAKE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE NEXT IN LINE FOR THE PRESIDENCY INSTEAD OF THE SECT. OF STATE.   THE BILL HAS NOT YET BEEN VOTED UPON BY EIGHT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS.

MANILLA:
GENERAL MACARTHUR PROCLAIMED THE ISLAND OF LUZON IS NOW LIBERATED.   AMERICANS LANDED ON LUZON JAN. 9, 1945.   SCATTERED ENEMY REMNANTS MUST BE HUNTED DOWN BUT ORGANIZED RESISTANCE WAS CRUSHED IN NORTHERN LUZON.   AMERICAN TROOPS DRIVING NORTH AND SOUTH THROUGH THE CAGAYAN VALLEY HAVE JOINED AFTER A MORE THAN TWENTY DAY CAMPAIGN AND CLEANED OUT THE ENTIRE LENGHT OF THE VALLEY.   JAPS THAT WERE TRAPPED IN THE VALLEY FLED INTO THE HILLS ON BOTH SIDES AS THE YANKS CLOSED IN.

SAID MACARTHUR: "EXCEPT FOR ISOLATED REGIONS THIS CLOSES THE MAJOR PHASE OF THE NORTHERN LUZON CAMPAIGN, ONE OF THE MOST SAVAGE AND BITTERLY FOUGHT IN AMERICAN HISTORY".   ONCE POWERFUL JAP FORCES IN THE 200 MILE LONG VALLEY ARE NOW SCATTERED INTO THE MOUNTAINS AND CUT OFF FROM ALL SUPPLIES.   MACARTHUR PLACED JAP DEAD AT WELL OVER 100,000 WITH THOUSANDS MORE GRAVES COUNTED AND SEVERAL THOUSAND PRISONERS.

U.S. LOSSES WERE LESS, WITH 11,000 WOUNDED.   JAP LOSSES THROUGHTOUT THE PHILLIPPINES EXCEEDS 400,000.   THE ONLY OTHER ENEMY FORCE OF CONSEQUENCE IS ON MINDANAO AND THEY WERE SCATTERED AND GROWING DISSOLVED.

OUR AIRMEN CAME IN TO POUND AT EAST BORNEO PORT OF BALIKAPAPAN WITH OVER 200 TONS OF BOMBS.   OVER 150 PLANES OF THE 15TH AND 13TH AIR FORCES TOOK PART.   A DUTCH CORRESPONDENT SAID THAT ALLIED SHIPS HAVE BEEN SHELLING BALIKAPAPAN.   AUSTRALIANS ON NORTHWEST BORNEO EXPANDED GAINS IN THE BRUNES BAY AND IN THE SERIA MIRI OIL FIELDS TO THE SOUTH.

ADMIRAL NIMITZ ANNOUNCED PACIFIC FLEET CASUALTIES FROM MARCH 18TH TO JUNE 20TH WERE 4907 KILLED OR MISSING AND 4824 WOUNDED IN ALL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH OKINAWA.   THIS BRINGS TOTAL CASUALTIES IN WHOLE OKINAWA CAMPAIGN, GROUND OR OTHERWISE, TO OVER 46,000 OF WHICH NEARLY 12,000 WERE KILLED OR MISSING.   THIS INCLUDES NAVY, ARMY AND MARINES.   JAP DEAD IN ACTION ALONE TOTALED 101,000 PLUS 1,500 PRISONERS.   AN ESTIMATED 3500 OTHER JAPS WERE KILLED IN THE BATTLE OF THE INLAND SEA IN MARCH AND OVER 4000 JAPS PINNED DOWN IN ATTACKS ON U.S. FORCES.   MOPUP OPERATIONS ARE IN PROGRESS ON OKINAWA.   GEN STILLWELL IS NOW ON OKINAWA.

ADMIRAL NIMITZ MADE FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF A NAVAL FORCE PENETRATING THE SEA OF OKHOTSK WEST OF THE KURILE ISLANDS, NORTH OF JAPAN.   A LIGHT NAVAL TASK FORCE OF NORTH PACIFIC FLEET CAUGHT A SMALL JAP CONVOY IN THE DAYLIGHT WEST OF ISLAND HARUMUKOTAN AND SANK THREE JAP SHIPS, PROBABLY SANK ANOTHER AND DAMAGED THE FIFTH.

HOLLYWOOD:
A MARRIAGE BY PROXY WAS PERFORMED IN MEXICO TUESDAY FOR FILM ACTRESS MERLE OBERON AND FILM CAMERMAN LUCIEN K. BALLARD WHILE THE TWO WERE AT WORK ON A MOVIE SET HERE.   MISS OBERON SAID HER ATTORNEY ARRANGED FOR THE PROXY WEDDING IN JUAREZ BECAUSE SHE AND BALLARD WERE UNABLE TO LEAVE THEIR WORK AT THE TIME.   SHE OBTAINED A DIVORCE IN JUAREZ FROM ALEXANDER KORDA, FILM PRODUCER.

WASHINGTON:
HIGHT GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE AGREED THAT GERMAN AND JAPANESE PROPERTY SEIZED IN THIS COUNTRY AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR NEVER SHALL BE RETURNED TO THE OWNERS.   CHAIRMAN KILGORE, DEMOCRAT, WEST VA., MADE PUBLIC WEDNESDAY THE VIEWS OF THE ALIEN PROPERTY CUSTODIAN, THE STATE DEPT., AND THE TREASURY IN CONNECTION WITH A SERIES OF HEARINGS DESIGNED TO DEVELOP CONGRESSIONAL POLICY TOWARD THE DEFEATED ENEMY AFTER PEACE RETURNS.

GUAM:
JAPANESE SUICIDE PLANES MADE TWO DIRECT HITS ON THE CARRIER BUNKER HILL CAUSING 656 CASUALTIES BUT THE FLAGSHIP OF VICE ADMIRAL MITSCHER FOUGHT HOURS OF FLAMING DEATH AND WILL FIGHT AGAIN.   THE NAVY DISCLOSED THAT THE BUNKER HILL, DESPITE LOSSES OF 375 DEAD, 19 MISSING, AND 262 WOUNDED IN THE TRAGIC EPISODE OFF OKINAWA MAY 11TH, IS HOME UNDER HER OWN POWER AT THE PUGET SOUND NAVY YARD.

A DARING MANEUVER, WHICH LITERALLY FLUNG THE FIRE FROM HER HANGER DECK, CAPPED THE HEROIC EFFORTS OF THE CREW AND ASSISTING SHIPS TO CONQUER THE FLAMES.   THREE HOURS AFTER THE ATTACK, FIREFIGHTERS WERE STILL WORKING IN THE FLAMING WRECKAGE.

WITH THE WILKES BARRE AT HER SIDE, THE BUNKER HILL WENT INTO A WIDE, SEVENTY DEGREE TURN AT 2 1/2 DEGREE RUDDER.   IN TURNING THE NAVY ACCOUNT SAID SHE SHIFTED THE LOAD OF WATER ACROSS THE SHIP AND SLUMPED THE HEART OF THE ROARING INFERNO ON HER HANGER DECK OFF INTO THE SEA.   ADMIRAL MITSCHER TRANSFERRED HIS FLAG TO ANOTHER CARRIER AFTER THE SHIP WAS SAVED.

BRIDGEPORT, CONN:
PROSECUTOR MORRISON OF THE NEW CANAAN MUNICIPAL COURT ANNOUNCED TUESDAY THAT IMOGENE STEVENS, WIFE OF AN ARMY PARATROOPS MAJOR, WILL BE ARRAIGNED IN THAT TRIBUNAL ON JULY 30TH. ON A CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER IN THE SLAYING OF A YOUNG SAILOR.   THE 24 YEAR OLD WIFE OF MAJOR RALSEY STEVENS WILL BE FORMALLY PRESENTED BEFORE JUDGE MORRISON.   THE ANNOUNCEMENT CAME AS THE FAMILY OF THE SLAIN SAILOR, ALBERT KOVACS, DELAYED HIS FUNERAL FOR 24 HOURS BECAUSE OF A NAVAL INQUIRY INTO THE SHOOTING.

WITH CHURCHILLS CAMPAIGN TOUR:
PRIME MINISTER CHURCHILL DISAGREED WEDNESDAY WITH "THE VIEW THAT WE WERE NEARLY FINISHED OR FINISHED IN 1941" AND DECLARED THAT AS A MATTER OF FACT "WE WERE GETTING STRONGER EVERYDAY".   FIELD MARSHALL MONTGOMERY TOLD A GROUP OF AMERICAN OFFICERS AND ENLISTED MEN AT WEISBADEN, GERMANY YESTERDAY THAT BRITAIN WAS FINISHED IN 1941 AND COULD NOT POSSIBLY HAVE SURVIVED WITHOUT AMERICAN AID.

OSLO, NORWAY:
HENRY JOHANSEN, LUMBERMAN HUSBAND OF THE METROPOLITAN SINGER KIRSTEN FLAGSTAD, WAS ACCUSED BY THE GOVERNMENT WEDNESDAY OF GROSSING ABOUT TWENTY-MILLION DOLLARS IN BUSINESS WITH THE GERMANS DURING THE OCCUPATION OF NORWAY.   JOHANSEN WAS A MEMBER OF QUISLINGS PARTY AND HAS PLEADED INNOCENT TO CHARGES OF WAR PROFITEERING.

NORDHAUSEN, GERMANY:
FROM THE VAST UNDERGROUND FACTORY AT NORDHAUSEN 110 COMPLETE V2 ROBOT PLANES HAVE BEEN AKEN BY US ARMY ENGINEERS FOR TESTING AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.   THE BRITISH AND FRENCH ALSO HAVE REMOVED MANY SAMPLES.   WHEN THE RUSSIANS ARRIVE TO OCCUPY THIS HARTZ MOUNTAIN SECTOR OF GERMANY THERE WILL BE AMPLE SPECIMENS PLUS MATERIAL OF ALL KINDS IN QUANTITIES THAT WOULD STAGGER THE IMAGINATION.
